Alaya Escape Owners

Alaya Escape is a family-owned and operated retreat run by Craig and Molly Dickson since December 2013.

My wife (Molly) and I (Craig), along with our 2 girls, Scarlett (11years-old) and Indigo (8 years-old) live on site and consider it an absolute blessing to be able to do so. Scarlett and Indigo offer much of the WHY for all of our ventures and for us, like all parents, the sun rises and sets with them as the center piece of all considerations. Funny little monkeys that they are, the bring so much light and love into our lives and this retreat.

We juggle other work commitments and businesses, but love the lives we lead. Craig is a coach, trainer and consultant with GRIT Applied Positive Psychology and Molly a high school teacher on the Sunshine Coast. As people who have tasted the ‘sting’ of burnout from  striving out in the world and doing too much for too long, we wanted to create a haven where we could return to a greater level of balance and harmony. We often reflect upon how lucky we are and how surreal it often seems to have ended up doing something that we are passionate about and in such an idyllic place. Our vision is to continue living fully in line with our purpose and values, savoring the moments and the ‘little things’  and helping others to do so as well.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”2474″ img_size=”350×300″][vc_single_image image=”2396″ img_size=”350×300″][vc_single_image image=”2058″ img_size=”350×300″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

Alaya Escape:

Alaya Escape is ideally situated on top of the Blackhall Mountain Range, ideally located between Mooloolaba (20 minutes) and Montville (15 minutes) and everything else that the Sunshine Coast has to offer. Operating since 2006, Alaya Escape provides the opportunity to laze away the days in nature with the sound of running water falls, native birds and ocean breezes to accompany you. Whether your aim is for personal renewal through the peace and quiet, float tank, massages, sauna and pool or a more intensive personally tailored individual, couple or small group retreat, our environment, options, programs and staff can assist you towards outstanding experiences. Otherwise, taking time for shopping, winery and craft brewery tours, a surf or dining opulence, ‘retreatists’ can have it all and still escape back to the mountain top oasis we call home.

We have powered thousands of man hours into Alaya Escape and a great deal of resources towards getting it to where it currently is. The hard work is paying off with our reviews being consistently very high and the feedback we receive generally glowing. We have a long way to go and this process will most likely never finish (sigh!), but we set ourselves since the early days to create a destination that we ourselves would like to visit.

Alaya Escape is an opportunity which we feel incredibly grateful for and it has been a bonus that we have made so many enduring friendships with people who have stayed here. It still amazes me and makes me feel incredibly proud when I see how people’s faces light up when they finally get to the retreat (it is a bit of a long, dusty and winding road getting here) and view our oasis for the first time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ col_padding_side=”left_right” css=”.vc_custom_1571455886080{border-radius: 25px !important;}”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_media_grid element_width=”6″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1580685657404-b4d6a0ff5ce015a8d93a0daccb342072-6″ include=”2538,2531,2530,2528,2534,2517,2522,2600″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”2593″ img_size=”350×300″][vc_single_image image=”2601″ img_size=”350×300″][vc_single_image image=”2387″ img_size=”350×300″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

Alaya Developments:

We have worked tirelessly towards enhancing our retreat. This has included the planting of thousands of tropical plants, as well as multiple varieties of clumping bamboo species and fruit trees. Landscaping has been extensive with the addition of many authentic Balinese-themed statues, water features, pathways and walkways, furniture, ornaments and a range of other enticing features and changes. Structurally, we have built a floatation tank facility, 2 incredible rooms + one additional premium room currently in construction (ready by early 2019), along with a training room for holding personal and professional development retreats full-time from March 2019.

Other significant additions include a Finnish ‘hot rocks’ sauna, mountain bikes for exploring the mountain trails, a magnesium salt floatation tank (sensory deprivation tank), an additional Bali hut for relaxing and many other significant inclusions. Renovations to the existing rooms and spaces have also been exhaustive. Additionally, we have created a self-service bar area and a library area for taking time out and listening to the running water features, pool waterfall, tropical birds and the rustling of the mountain breezes. All designed to enhance the casual and comfortable feel of our retreat and to also offer freedom, trust and autonomy to our guests who we very much want to feel at home here.
